Brother SE600 Setup
First, let us have a look at how to set up the machine before using it.
- Winding the bobbin
- Threading the upper thread
The thread that is used for sewing should depend on the fabric used. First, place the bobbin on the bobbin winder shaft. Now slide the shaft to the right till it is fixed in its place.
Remove the spool cap and wind the thread on the spool pin. The spool should be installed correctly so that the thread does not get tangled leading to the breaking of the needle. Now pull the thread under the thread guide and the thread guide cover and to the front. Pull the thread under the hook on the bobbin winding thread guide and wind it clockwise around the bobbin 5-6 times.
Now, turn on the machine and press the “start/stop” button to wind the bobbin. Once the bobbin winding slows down, press the button once again to stop it.
Turn the machine on and raise the presser foot. Press the button to raise the needle. Now remove the spool cap, wind the thread, and insert it back to the spool pin.
Pull the thread under the thread guide and thread guide cover and bring it to the front. Make sure that the thread unwinds to the front from the bottom so that it does not get tangled.
Now, pull the thread through the thread channel into the thread take-up lever. The thread should then be fed through the needle bar thread guide. Pull the end of the thread to the left and pass it through the threader thread guide. Now slowly pull the thread from the front and place it on the slit of the threader thread guide. Cut the thread.
Lower the presser footer lever and then the needle threader lever to make the hook turn. Now slowly raise the needle threader lever. Now you should slowly pull the thread that has passed through the eye of the needle.
The presser foot lever should now be raised, and thread should be passed under the presser foot. Now pull about 2 inches of the thread towards the rear of the machine.

Brother SE600 Common Problems
Here are a few of the common problems faced while using the Brother SE600 computerized sewing and embroidery machine.
Machine not sewing
One reason for the machine not sewing could be because the bobbin winder shaft is pushed towards the right. If it is so, then push it towards the left.
Sometimes the machine may not sew if the threading is not done correctly. Check the threading and make sure that the threading line on the handwheel is on the top position. You should also ensure that the presser foot is lifted before threading. You can refer to the instruction manual for the correct way of threading.
If the bobbin is not correctly loaded on the machine, then also you can have problem with sewing. Check the instruction manual for the correct way of loading the bobbin.
Machine sewing in reverse
If this happens, you can turn the machine off and switch it on after sometime. This should solve the problem.
Machine not picking up the lower thread
First, you should check whether the needle is broken. If so, you should immediately replace the needle. You can also try re-threading the machine and see whether the lower thread is working correctly.
Always make sure that the needle used is compatible with Brother SE600 computerized sewing and embroidery machine. Organ or Schmetz branded needles are highly recommended for this machine.
Machine skipping stitches
If this happens, check the needle. If the needle is bent, replace the same. You can also re-thread the machine and make sure that the foot is raised.
You should also check the fabric and ensure that the needle is compatible with the material. For eg; if you are stitching on stretch fabric, make sure that you use a ballpoint needle.
If the problem cannot be solved even after changing the needle and re-threading, then you need the service of a technician.
Poor stitch quality

Bunching of thread
In the case of a bunching problem, you can re-thread and check whether the problem persists. Also, make sure that while re-threading the presser foot is in a raised position. If it is not, then no tension is applied on the top thread which can result in the bunching of thread.
You should also ensure that the bobbin case is in the right position. You can check the instruction manual for the correct positioning of the bobbin.
Fabric not feeding properly
If this happens, check whether the drop feed is lowered. If so, raise it back so that you can easily feed the fabric.
Similarly, if the stitch length on the machine is too low, then also you may not be able to feed the fabric properly.
Needle not moving
This could be because the machine is in the bobbin winding mode. If so, push the bobbin winder shaft to the left. This will switch on the sewing mode, and the needle will move freely.
How to Select The Right Thread And Needle For Brother SE600
For a sewing project to be successful, the right type of thread must be used for the fabric.
In the case of medium weight fabric like flannel and broadcloth and thin fabric like georgette and satin, cotton and synthetic thread of 60 – 90 sizesand silk thread of 50 size can be used.
In the case of thick fabric like denim and corduroy, a cotton thread of 30 and 50 size and synthetic and silk thread of 50 -60 sizes can be used.
Stretch fabrics like jersey and tricot need knit thread of size 50 – 60.
The needle selected should also depend on the type of fabric. You can go for a thin needle for light fabric and thick needle for heavy material. In the case of stretch fabric, a ballpoint needle should be used to prevent the skipping of stitches.
