How To Hem Pants With Tape
To hem your pants with tape, you first need to gather all the supplies required for the process. In this process, you will need the hemming tape, tea towel, iron, and your broken trousers.
After that, you need to prepare your trouser for the process. Once you design your trousers, you can apply the hem tape properly to the area required to be hemmed.
Before applying the tape, you need to cuff your pants to the appropriate length, and it would be best if you iron your pant to form a crease. You can do this using a ruler or any measuring tape.
You have to make sure that your pants attain the acquired length to be hemmed. After that, trim off the excess fabric to a 1.5 inches distance from the ironed hemline. You can unfold the cuffs to apply the tape now.
Now, press the tape and continue lining it while applying the tape around the pant’s leg. Next, you need to fuse the tape with the fabric of the pant.
You can do this by placing a thin cloth over the cuffed fabric and then heat your iron and apply it over the cloth. Remove the cloth and iron the remaining fabric.
Finally, after all the steps, you need to try on the pants. Yeah! It is the essential factor to do as without trying; you won’t determine whether your pants are hemmed at the correct length or not.

Steps To Hem Pants With Tape
Step 1 – prepare your pants to hem.
Are you ready? Here is the first step. At first, you need to lay down your trousers on the iron board. Yeah!
Firstly you need to mark the points to the hem, and for that, you can use a marking pencil or chalk to mark the distance of 1.5 inches from the hemline around the entire pant leg.
Later, trim off the excess fabric with some pinking shears.
Now, iron the pants by turning them inside out and then unfold the hem. After ironing the section, you can lift the cuff to ensure that tape is fused correctly to hold the hem intact.
While ironing, ensure that it won’t damage your fabric.
Step 2 – apply the fabric tape.
Now, you need to pull or cut off the fabric tape to wrap it around your pant’s leg. Wind the fabric tape on both legs of your pant just above your hem fold.
For that, you need to cut the tape in acquired length and remove its back paper, line up the tape’s edge with the fabric’s crease that you ironed.
You can have more tape if you run out off the one you trimmed, and then just fold the cuffs to the tape when you are done. If you don’t have any fabric tape, then you can use any other tape as it would get washed away.
But, make sure that the tape is applied straight on the pant’s bottom.
Repeat the procedure to fuse the fabric tape with the pants and repeat it with another leg.
Step 3 – fold the trouser over the fabric tape.
Next, you need to fold the end of your trouser leg over the fabric tape you applied. Remember, you should not let the pant stick out as it needs to be covered entirely by the fabric otherwise it will stick to the iron or tea towel. By this, it will not hold the hem correctly.

Step 4 – wet the tea towel or cloth.
After folding the fabric to the fabric tape, you need to wet the tea towel or the cloth under the cold water. Wring it out properly, ensuring that no water is draining out of it.
Step 5 – place the tea towel or the cloth over the hem and iron it
After doing so, you need to put the tea towel on the hem. You should fold the towel in half and place it over the hem. With the heated iron in low steam, press it hard over the hem for about 8 to 10 seconds.
You need to be very careful while doing this step if your pant is of synthetic material. Synthetic materials can meltdown and if you are concerned for your fabric, try it on a scrap size fabric for 5 seconds. Make sure that towel is damped thoroughly.
If your pant’s fabric is so delicate or you are more concerned, then you can try the small piece in the inconspicuous space. Often no such problems occur, but just for safety, you can prefer doing this.
Don’t touch the fabric tape with a hot iron as it will get stick to the iron and get burn.
Step 6 – allow the heated hem to cool down and then check the bond
Allow the hem to get cool down for some minutes, and after that, you should check whether it has adhered to the fabric properly or not.
If the fabric has not stuck to the tape properly and is coming apart, iron it again and cool for more seconds. You might require to wet the tea towel again if it gets dried out.
If your fabric tape is stuck firmly to the fabric, then it’s done. Otherwise, you need to perform the step again to make it adhere properly.
Let’s move on now to our last step.
Step 7 – try on the pants.
This is yet the final and most essential step to carry out. Trying out your pants after hemming is necessary to determine whether your pants are hemmed at appropriate or desired length or not.
If any of your pant legs is not similar in size to another, then you can do it again. If you think the size is shorter, then again open it and perform the steps again.
So, trying out before finalizing the hem is essential for any further misconceptions. Yeah! Voila! You are now ready with your hemmed pants. Remember, you need to repeat the step when the hem tape is hot. When it gets cool, it will become challenging to do so.
Is Hem Tape Permanent?
Hem tapes are an innovative creation to hem your clothes or other fabrics without using a sewing machine or threads. The adhesive on hem tape produces a strong bond that will last longer.
Hem tape is the quick alternative if you have to alter or do something with your clothes or fabric. They are permanent adhesives and cannot be removed.
Applying hem tape is so easy as you just need to place it between the two fabrics or the fold of a fabric that needs to be hemmed. Then, you need to press the fabric firmly or can iron it. The adhesive gets melt and bind the two fabric together.
